Description of Work

The Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking applications for the position of Associate Professor of Practice in Music Education

Duties and responsibilities:
TEACHING: This is a teaching position with no research expectation. Responsibilities will include serving as Coordinator of Music Field Experiences (COMFE), which involves developing relationships with music educators and administrators in Lincoln-area school districts, securing the placement of our students in four semesters of field experience and a student teaching semester, serving as a university supervisor, and overseeing university supervisors (faculty and GTAs) who work with practicum students and student teachers. Additionally, instructional responsibilities will include student teaching seminar, and other music education courses according to area of teaching specialization and the needs of the Music Education Area. The COMFE also serves as a liaison to the College of Education and Human Services in matters of music teacher certification and criminal background checks for students. Another responsibility is serving as an advisor for the BME degree, which requires tracking students through various stages of the music education curriculum, and helping them with the registration process each semester.

SERVICE: Serve on faculty committees for the department, college and university; provide service/leadership in appropriate professional organizations in music education.

OTHER: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music. Conduct all duties in a collegial, ethical, and supportive fashion.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with an emphasis in music education; successful record of K-12 school music teaching experience (must hold or have once held teaching licensure in a state, in order to do supervision in schools).

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate with an emphasis in music education; experience teaching undergraduates at the college level; experience as a supervisor of practicum students and student teachers in music; experience as a college/university representative working with K12 music educators and administrators to secure placements for college/university students in practicum and student teaching experiences; a broad skill set that includes effective written and verbal communication, highly adaptable social skills, empathic leadership, a student-centered orientation, efficient time management, and strong organizational skills.

Experience in interdisciplinary collaborations (e.g. dance, film and new media, theatre, linguistics, psychology, neurology, etc.) preferred. Experience in the recruitment and advising of first-generation students and a diverse student body preferred.
