Description of Work

Focused Expertise Assignment – 4-H Youth Development Education (Approximately 80% of time):
This is a full-time, year-round, non-tenured position. This educator’s home base will be in Harlan County. This educator‘s geographic region includes Harlan and Furnas Counties. The major responsibility of this position is to provide regional leadership for University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension’s 4-H and Youth Development Program. This educator is expected to interact closely with 4-H clientele in these communities and deliver programs in their geographic area. This focused extension educational program supports 4-H Youth Development including: a) science education; b) animal science; c) agricultural literacy; d) career development; e) community development; and f) healthy living. In this position the extension educator will:
1. Use innovative strategies and current technologies to support a robust 4-H youth education program designed to inspire young people’s understanding of agriculture.
2. Engage in a collaborative-learning environment with young people and volunteers to apply research-based information.
3. Deliver educational programming for youth development programming statewide and within the assigned geographic region. Within their geographic region the educator will also engage with unit leaders, extension advisory committees, and local stakeholders to determine needs and provide access to educational opportunities.
4. Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment with extension professionals and partners to translate and teach the latest research based information.
5. Use entrepreneurial practices to secure grants, program fees and partnerships to leverage the extension educational program’s resource base and reach.
6. Partner with research faculty in action research that can be applied to educational programming.
7. Practice effective extension scholarship by conducting needs assessments, identifying priorities, measuring program impact and reporting results at professional meetings and in professional publications.
8. Develop a professional development plan by teaching to enhance and maintain professional expertise in youth development and extension pedagogy.

Serve as Unit Leader (Approximately 20% of time):
1. Partner with other content focused Extension Educators assigned to their geographic area to:
a. Inform them of critical local issues in their content area,
b. Partner in promoting access to and participation in educational programming addressing those critical issues,
c. Update extension advisory groups, county commissioners/supervisors, stakeholders, etc. of the latest educational opportunities.
2. Promote effective working relationships and teamwork among staff. Hire, supervise and provide professional development for support staff.
3. Provide leadership for the annual budget planning, accountability of financial operations and IT audit/inventory to conform to county, university and state regulations and “best management practices.”
4. Network with elected officials, advisory groups and community stakeholders and provide them impact on the total extension program.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and or university level.

Some travel is required. Must meet driver standards according to UNL policy and have a valid driver’s license. Criminal history background check will be conducted.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree required; one degree in youth development, agricultural or science education or closely related field. Master’s degree must be completed by start date.
• Successful experience teaching in a formal or non-formal setting.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate (i.e. publications, presentations, web, and social media).
• Experience and demonstrated ability in working with youth and youth organizations including understanding of positive youth development and youth program management.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in working with individuals, coworkers, and teams to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by college, career, and/or community activities.
• Outstanding leadership skills as demonstrated by roles in college, career, and/or community activities.
• Ability to utilize electronic and online technologies for educational program delivery.
• Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming.
• Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, fund generation, contracting and/or cost recovery efforts.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and programs.
• Demonstrated experience/training in the recruitment, training, mentoring and management of volunteers.
