Description of Work

The Plant Synthetic Biologist will contribute to the integrated research and teaching land-grant mission in the Department of Biochemistry, Center for Plant Science Innovation and the IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.
The incumbent will establish a high profile, nationally/internationally recognized, and externally supported research and education program aimed at development and application of synthetic biology tools to address questions central to plant biology that contribute to crop productivity and/or quality. Synthetic biology tools to be developed by the incumbent may include, but are not limited, to those involving genome editing, gene stacking, and/or RNA-based control of gene expression. The ability to apply computational methods for use of large data sets in synthetic biology tool development is also desired. It is expected that the incumbent will apply synthetic biology tools for studies of photosynthesis, central carbon metabolism, specialized metabolism or other biochemical or biological processes leading to improved crop germplasm. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to team research in areas such as root-microbe-soil interactions and/or stress biology as well as nutritional or industrial enhancement of crop plants.
The incumbent will be associated with the recently established NSF EPSCoR-funded Center for Root and Rhizobiome Innovation. The successful candidate will also have access to state of the art proteomics and metabolomics core facilities in the UNL Center for Biotechnology and will benefit from high-speed computing resources in the Holland Computing Center. Extensive field facilities, state-of-the-art image-based phenotyping instrumentation, breeding resources, and crop transformation core capacity are available to support translational research. The incumbent is expected to establish a vigorous and vibrant research program that attracts federal, commodity, international foundation, and/or industry funding; mentor graduate students; publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities. It is expected the incumbent will measure the impact of their research program and communicate those results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and as appropriate, the media.
The incumbent will also benefit from collaborative research opportunities with faculty throughout the University of Nebraska system, including those in the Center for Plant Science Innovation, the Redox Biology Center, School of Resources, Research and Extension Centers, and Nebraska Innovation Campus.
The incumbent will be expected to average 0.20 FTE as determined by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Academic Appointment Guidelines. This will include contribution to the teaching mission of CASNR and in particular will contribute to the instruction in the core biochemistry courses in the Department of Biochemistry. Specific course assignments may be changed over time based on the academic needs of the Department of Biochemistry. It is expected the incumbent will contribute to recruitment, retention and placement activities; incorporation of outcomes assessment; engagement in instructional improvement; advising/mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; and mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
In addition to the above-described duties, the successful candidate will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested in biochemistry and the Center for Plant Science Innovation, college/division, institute, and or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include a PhD or equivalent in biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, plant physiology or related field; a minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience; and a strong record of original research as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications. For Assistant Professor, the incumbent is expected to develop an internationally recognized research program that attracts federal, commodity, international foundation, and/or industry funding leading to research results published in refereed scientific journals and presented at professional meetings. Applicants at the Associate Professor levels must have an externally supported research program and/or sufficient private sector experience, with publication, patent, and presentation outcomes demonstrating sustained and recognized research productivity. The incumbent will broadly address the development of synthetic biology tools, which may include but are not limited to those involving genome editing, gene stacking, and/or RNA-based control of gene expression and apply these tools for studies of photosynthesis, central carbon metabolism, specialized metabolism or other biochemical or biological processes that lead to improved crop germplasm.

Preferred Qualifications
