Description of Work

Administer and lead the Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) Wildland Fire Protection Team (wildfire operations, education and training, and FireWise) programs. Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and monitoring the wildland fire protection program’s goals and objectives. Work with NFS leadership, partners, stakeholders, government agencies, volunteer fire districts, non-governmental organizations, landowners, staff, and businesses to develop and manage the wildland fire operations program in Nebraska. Assist the leadership with planning and accomplishment reporting for the NFS. Manage appropriate grants, including the planning, implementing, monitoring, financial tracking, and performance reporting for WUI, LSR, and other wildland fire grants. Working with staff, conceive and initiate the development of new grants and projects. Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and monitoring the wildland fire training program. Manage all facets of NFS fire training and certification program. Plan, prepare, and implement fire training to rural Nebraska fire districts. Work cooperatively with agency training partners. Represent the NFS at appropriate local, state, regional, or national levels and on committees relative to wildland fire as needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in forestry, fire science, or closely related natural resources related field plus five years of experience in wildland fire protection required; equivalent education/experience considered. Supervisory experience essential. Experience must demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills. Word processing and spreadsheet skills essential. Knowledge of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Management team training and qualifications programs at Single Resource Boss, RxB2, or equivalent qualification required. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in forestry with emphasis in wildland fire protection. Ten years of experience in wildland fire protection. Experience developing and successfully implementing projects and programs; identifying, defining, and implementing new program opportunities; defining, guiding, and implementing strategic and operational planning and management activities; organizing, developing, and delivering public presentations, events, and publications. Database and presentation software skills. Knowledge of IQS, ROSS, and GIS/GPS. NWCG certification at Type III Incident or equivalent qualification.
