Description of Work

Focused Assignment – Agricultural Systems Economist (approximately 100% of time):
This educator’s home base will be in southeast Nebraska.

This is a 12-month, non-tenured position. In this position the educator will:
1. Develop a proactive and effective extension and translational research program in Nebraska in livestock and crop production system economics, with evidence of program impact and direct learner engagement.
2. Provide strong regional and state-wide leadership, and be an integral team member for focused, comprehensive educational programs aimed at helping agricultural producers be more resilient to cyclical swings in production input costs and market prices.
3. Partner with clientele, ag organizations, government entities and other relevant educational and service organizations to strengthen relevance and reach of educational programming.
4. Actively participate in Issue Teams addressing short and long-term integration and economic viability of livestock and crop operations and other Issue teams where outcomes would benefit from an agricultural economics component.

Specifically, this Extension Educator is expected to
1. Integrate economic analysis to strengthen farmers’ and ranchers’ strategic and profitable management and marketing decisions.
2. Be a contributing member of an integrated team that will coordinate and teach agricultural systems economics programming in Nebraska locally and state-wide to:
a. Improve profitability and sustainability;
b. Enhance resiliency of livestock and cropping systems from cost and price variability;
c. Expand producer awareness and confidence in using risk and strategic management tools;
d. Assist crop and livestock producers in applying financial, management and marketing strategies that will enable them to improve their economic decision making.
3. Work with livestock and crop educators and specialists to assess the financial impact of a variety of crop and livestock production practices and strategies to optimize profitability and improve success.
4. Cooperate with multi-disciplinary researchers statewide and beyond to develop applied production research and demonstration projects and provide the economics expertise to assess project profitability.

This focused Extension educator will also connect with unit leaders and other Extension professionals across the state for the purpose of developing local support for Nebraska Extension. These responsibilities include:
1. Serve as a representative of the University of Nebraska and assume responsibility for development, planning, marketing, teaching, conducting and evaluating educational programs in subject matter areas for which responsibility has been assigned. Program emphasis will reflect the educational mission of University of Nebraska – Lincoln Extension. All educational programs will be research-based and will produce scholarly outcomes in the area of Farm and Ranch Management Economics. All educational programs and actions will meet affirmative action requirements and embrace diversity.
2. With other staff and clientele groups of the state, continually assess state-wide economic issues for livestock and crop enterprises, assign priority to programs, and commit time and other resources to highest priority areas.
3. Contribute as a team member. Cooperate with other faculty and staff to coordinate an integrated program, promote effective working relationships and facilitate teamwork by all staff. Coordinate programming with the faculty in the UNL Department of Agricultural Economics.
4. Assess the impact of program efforts in assigned subject matter areas in team or individual effort and report these impacts to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln Extension, community and public leaders, general public, and peers at conferences and meetings.
5. Publish scholarly applied/translational research in scientific journals, extension publications, and popular press.
6. Participate in professional development activities by attending and presenting at relevant professional conferences.
7. Maintain a working or team relationship with educational partners, community organizations, business and advisory committees for program guidance, linkages and evaluation.
8. Develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase teaching skills, knowledge of subject matter areas as well as interpersonal and team skills reflective of anticipated program needs.
9. Develop grant proposals and solicit external funding for partial or complete support of research-based programming.
10. Contribute to creating and maintaining a positive, professional image for the University of Nebraska.
11. Participate in recruitment of potential students for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Some travel is required. Must meet driver standards according to UNL policy and have a valid driver’s license. Criminal history background check will be conducted.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in agricultural economics or closely related field. Master’s degree must be completed by start date.
• Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders in publications, websites, and oral presentations.
• Training in economic theory, management principles, and quantitative methods and their application to applied problems.
• Knowledge of the development and use of enterprise budgeting techniques, farm and ranch production record keeping and financial management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with livestock and/or crop production systems in Nebraska.
• Successful experience teaching in a formal or non-formal setting.
• Record of educational programs for students and/or stakeholders focused on the economics of agricultural production.
• Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming.
• Exhibited ability to work in teams and provide leadership.
• Outstanding leadership skills as demonstrated by roles in college, career, and/or community activities.
