Description of Work

We are seeking an extraordinary individual to build a Geography Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), a public land grant research university and member of the Big10 Academic Alliance with enrollment of over 25,000 students. The Program Director will have a mandate to build a Geography Program in the College with faculty whose initial research focus is in Human Geography, with particular interest in human-environment interactions, the Great Plains, and research programs that integrate geospatial technologies. The Program will also include as affiliates physical, cultural, and human geographers in other units including departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Natural Resources, and the Community and Regional Planning program. Once established the program may become a department.

The Director will provide strategic leadership and vision to build a Geography Program, including hiring faculty, with excellence in research, education, and outreach, and will play a key role in developing strong relationships between Geography and other departments and units across the university. The Program Director will maintain a vigorous research program in any area of geography, but with preference for human-environment interactions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include: a Ph.D. in Geography from an accredited college or university and current rank as an established associate professor or full professor; evidence of administrative experience; evidence of excellence in teaching; an outstanding and active record of refereed publications and funded research; and an understanding of the breadth of geography and of potential collaborations between geography and other disciplines. The academic record must warrant appointment as a tenured full professor by August 14, 2017.

Additional qualifications include: proven success in academic leadership in the context of shared governance and transparent decision-making; experience with program building; excellent communication skills; an understanding of opportunities and challenges in the current funding climate; an interest in working with the University of Nebraska Foundation, donors, and alumni to support fundraising; an appreciation of the College teaching mission and newer pedagogical developments; a commitment to diversity; and experience managing financial and human resources.

Preferred Qualifications

The Program Director will maintain a vigorous research program in any area of geography, but with preference for human-environment interactions.
